#19 Adaptive Intelligencies, Part 3 - The Graves Model of Bio-Psycho-Social System of Human Development

We are continuing to go in-depth into each of the levels of Adaptive Intelligencies. In this podcast, we cover the remaining 3 levels: Orange, Green and Yellow.

  • Level 5 – Orange:
    • From the land of stability and security (blue) to options, possibilities, using and re-inventing the rules, prosperity, control over resources. Success is the keyword. He/she who has the largest resources has most power. Example: US corporations having more power that even the government or religion. Enterpreneurs, wealth hubs.
    • Metaphors: games; win-lose metaphors. One with more toys wins the game.
    • Shades of gray (on previous levels mainly black and white)
    • Movies: “Stepford wives”, “The Wall Street”
    • Leadership: to be gain, and to be kept.
    • Learning: break into part and analyse in pieces. The sense of wholeness hasn’t come here yet. Motivation: Challenges, and rewards after overcoming a challenge, or to let them demonstrate how skilled and powerful they are. Prove themselves.
    • Time: future-oriented. Present is sacrificed for the future, always in the rat-race.
    • Values: reasons for making money – accumulation of wealth.
    • Metaprograms: internal.
    • Extensions: high fashion, expensive things
    • Body: suave
    • Organizational structure: small scunk groups going for opportunities. Free market.
    • Science: if Newtonian is Blue, then Orange is Thermodynamics.
    • Scientific Orange: commercialize scientific findings
    • Architecture: sky scrapers; business buildings are the highest
  • Level 6 – Green
    • 1960s – hippy movement, free love, equality, acceptence, pluralistic world view. Relativity of viewpoints, resources. Democracy (in idealized form) is Green. It is important to hear everybody’s voice. Dark side: insistence on everybody being heard, and nothing gets done. Nobody’s taking charge (everybody’s equal), flat land, doesn’t recognize that people have different skills or points of view. Talks of law of attraction, spirituality, personal growth. New age spirituality sometimes gets mixed with magic (Purple) and confused for transcendence.
    • Family structure: harmony and love
    • Architecture: Frank Lloyd – everything blends into each other.
    • Metaprograms: external reference, attentions on people, on relationships. My rules for me, and your rules for you.
    • Clothing: loose-fitting clothing, flowing.
    • Political system: liberitarian view, freedom
    • Learning: unconscious model, mirror neurons come in
    • Movies: Star Track
  • Level 7 – Yellow
    • Systemic, “Gaia” perspective.
    • Values: freedom, flexibility, knowledge, competence. What do you know? Who can I learn it from? So much to learn, so little time.
    • Leadership: based on process who is best suited for what, and changes hands quickly.
    • Jobs: experts, advisors, stay in a shadow (advisors to kings – Merlin – an advisor to the King)
    • Metaprograms: reference – internal, expression of self. Metaphors – paradoxical, breaking free from dualities (right and wrong, black and white). You hold the tension of the opposites until the third quality emerges.
    • Movies: “Pi”
    • Learning strategies: self-driven, go anywhere to anyone where you can learn. You are becoming like a sponge.
    • Calibration: high sensory acuity, fluidly switch from being a teacher to being a student.

#18 Adaptive Intelligencies, Part 2 - The Graves Model of Bio-Psycho-Social System of Human Development

In this podcast, we discuss in depth the first four levels of adaptive intelligencies, the model of Clare Graves that he called bio-psycho-social systems of human development. Here we bring multiple dimensions such as the concepts of time (ref. Edward T. Hall), learning strategies, body dynamics, mythology, NLP metaprograms, language, architecture, and others, and see how these change with each level.

The topics of this talk includes:

  • Why is it important to master this model?
    • Personal growth, personal evolution
    • Deep understanding of yourself, your response potential
    • Understand structures (religious, political, etc.)
    • Rapport – with others, and with that what is greater than you
    • Moving between different cultures in the global economy
    • What is its impact on things like perception of time, architecture, science
    • Each level expands the boundaries of the previous levels by orders of magnitudes.
  • Beige – primal survival, food, warmth, shelter.
    • Very early stage of human evolution, children up to age of 16-18 months.
    • Architecture: Caves, fire to keep warm and keep away the animals
    • Movies: Tarzan; Cast Away (beginning)
  • Purple – tribe, magical world infused with god. You live as the tribe, and sacrifice yourself for the survival of the tribe. Introduction of specialization. About 50,000 years ago. Obidience to elders.
    • Movies: Medicine Man, Spirited Away, Lion King
    • Extensions: talismans, magical objects
    • Learning: how to be with people, the trust. Superstition-driven. Rituals.
    • Body dynamics: ritual dance
    • Myth: oral myths of creation of the Universe
    • Time: Ability to see (but not use) the past; emergence of cyclical time; “cicrle of life”
    • Architecture: circular huts
  • Red – is the big power trip; the first differentiation of self from
the world. Aggression. Conquest, explotative empires. Possession,
“you are mine”, “I do anything for me.” Complete egoists. 10,000 years
ago; child of 2-5 years old, “the terrible 2s”.

    • Examples: Attila the Hun, Alexander the Great.
    • Metaprograms: internally driven (expressing self); rules for others, no rules for me.
    • Movies: Attila the Hun, Gladiator, the villians in the James Bond movies
    • Metaphors: Life is a Jungle, it’s a doggy dog world
    • Body dynamics: passive-aggressive, unashamedly egoistic; space around them and taking command of space
    • Time: First time when humans can utilize the past
    • Architecture: Castles, outposts
    • Positional perspectives: the first, self appears (no others)
    • Learning strategy: very firm and strong, they only respond to the power, but not threatening, and immediate rewards (no future yet at this level)
  • Blue – 5,000 years ago, hierarchy, piramid. Literal interpretation
of laws, religions, rules. Only my truth is the right truth. In its
worst form becomes theocracy. Religion gives you gilt, law gives you
fear, punishment. The first level to bring stability and peace. At
its best, it’s stability and peace of mind, the meaning.

    • Language: “must”, “should”, “have to”, “it is wrong”.
    • Time: The future appears – cannot change it yet, but can observe. Paradise in the future.
    • Physics: Newtonian – blue. Absolute space, time.
    • Jobs: beurocrats, preachers, criminal law, science (the regular kind)
    • Extensions: clothes – everyone dresses as everyone else, uniforms
    • Body: rigit movements
    • Movies: 1984 (George Orwell) – the epithomy of blue, V for Vendetta, Dune (movement from purple to blue: tribe to king to religion)
    • Architecture: The tallest buildings are the houses of law, polititians, and religions
    • Books: what’s moral and what’s not moral
    • Martial Arts: samurai warriors – who does the sword serve?
    • NLP Metaprograms: external reference, someone else’s rules for my life, but they are also my rules; black and white perspectives.
    • Learning strategies: motivate by punishment.
  • Transition to Orange – to be continued in the next podcast
